An older church dedicated to the same saint is cited in some documents as the "Della Gera" church which is located on the right bank of the Tidone stream, in the place that is now commonly called the Cenotafio degli Alpini.
The construction of the current parish church began around the mid-16th century, but was only completed in 1728. In that year, the church was enlarged and a gallery supported by stone columns was added at the entrance; subsequently, a second grandstand was built above the first. The two stands, today called the "choir of the beaten" by the locals, probably take their name from the stone columns or from the two elegant hand-made wrought iron railings.
Over the years, the church has undergone several restorations. Among these, we remember the installation of an organ in 1872, the frescoes of the vault, and the mosaic floor laid in 1953.
The Bell Tower
The bell tower, built at the same time as the church or shortly after, is documented with certainty as early as 1629, when it was equipped with a bell blessed in the same year. It underwent two elevations, still visible today, which altered its structure and original architectural line. In 1882 a new clock and five bells were installed, replacing the previous ones. In 1935, to protect the baroque dome from the damage of time, a pyramidal sheet metal covering was added.
The Church of San Lorenzo a Romagnese represents a perfect union between the original Romanesque style and the subsequent Baroque additions. Its architecture reflects the history and culture of Romagna, making it not only a place of worship, but also an important historical and artistic monument. The patronal feast is celebrated on August 10th, Festa San Lorenzo.
